Flaying is the removal of skin from the body, usually in a way so that the skin all stays together to make a ghastly suit shaped remain.

Flaying is particularly depicted in mythology:

Xipe Totec was a flayed Aztec God who represented death and rebirth. Slaves were sacrificed annually as gratitude for his great gift.

Marsyas in Greek mythology challenged Apollo, God of the sun (among other things) to a music competition. Marsyas paid with his hide and his life.

Flaying in recent times has been picked out in the flaying of Nat Turner who attempted to lead a slave rebellion and of course Ed Gein who would flay and wear his victims skin.
